Sri Caitanya Bhagavata of Srila Vrndavana dasa Thakura is a masterpiece of Gaudiya Vaisnavism wherein the life and teachings of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are recorded. It is the main work that chronicles the pastimes of Sri Caitanya.
To chronicle the activities of an incarnation of the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna, demands the greatest of authors, and Srila Vrndavana dasa Thakura displays herein the mastery that confirms the scriptural statements that he is no less than an incarnation of Srila Vedavyasa, the compiler of the Vedas.
Sri Caitanya Bhagavat is in 3 sections; Adi-lila or the beginning, Madhya-lila or the middle, and Antya-lila or the later pastimes. Adi-lila illustrates the Lord's childhood and scholastic pastimes leading up to His acceptance of initiation from Isvara Puri. Madhya-lila narrates the events of the inauguration of the sankirtan movement featuring the appearance of prominent personalities such as Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita Acarya, Srivasa Thakura, Haridasa Thakura, Gadadhara Prabhu and several others who were the leading figures in Mahaprabhu's enactment of the sankirtan movement. Madhya-lila concludes with Mahaprabhu accepting the sanyassa or renounced order of live as the age of 24. Antya-lila features the life of Sri Caitanya as the best of all renunciants, as He travels from Bengal to Puri, exhibiting the topmost sentiments of a devotee who has attained love of Krishna, and His travels beyond Orissa and Bengal.
The three sections of Sri Caitanya Bhagavat also gives us full accounts of the live and pastimes of Sri Nityanana Prabhu, who is non-different from Lord Balarama.
The illustrious Vaisnava Master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur has written full commentary on this great scripture. Without this commentary, the real understanding of the life and pastimes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His associations will forever remain clouded.
